Zachary Gordin

Known primarily for their work on opera and concert stages across the US and abroad, acclaimed baritone Zachary Gordin and pianist/conductor Bryan Nies join forces on April 27, 2017 to present an intimate recital of vocal music highlighting the works of Venezuelan/French composer Reynaldo Hahn. Tickets are $8 and free to SSU students.

Gordin, who teaches voice at Sonoma State, will sing Hahn’s Chansons Grises along with other favorites, À Chloris, Dans la unit, Trois jours de vendange, Néère, and also Ralph Vaughan Williams’ song cycle The House of Life. Gordin and Nies will be releasing the Hahn songs on a CD under the MSR Classics label.

Baritone Zachary Gordin is redefining what it means to be an opera star in the 21st century. Praised for his “arresting musical insights” and a voice that is “commanding and intense without ever descending into coarseness (The Seattle Times), Gordin’s powerful voice and wide repertoire makes him an in-demand performer at opera houses and concert halls around the globe. In 2016, Gordin reprised his performance of Joseph De Rocher in Jake Heggie’s Dead Man Walking at Shreveport Opera, a role that won him critical acclaim when he premiered it at Dayton Opera in 2015.

Bryan Nies is the assistant conductor of the Oakland East Bay Symphony, lecturer at Stanford University, former principal conductor of Festival Opera, and continues to conduct symphonic concerts and modern opera, such as the West Coast premiere of Laura Kaminsky’s transgender opera, As One. A native of Chicago, IL, Nies holds a B.M. in Piano Performance and a B.A. in Psychology from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL.

Schroeder Hall at Sonoma State University’s Green Music Center is located 2 miles east of Highway 101 on Rohnert Park Expressway.
