Workshop Overview

Chanticleer in Sonoma commences at 2:00pm Wednesday, June 15th with a tutti choir rehearsal and concludes on June 19th at 4:00pm with a concert featuring Chanticleer and workshop participants. The program is packed with opportunities to learn about choral singing through participation, observation, and conversation. Each day includes chamber ensemble and tutti rehearsals directed by Chanticleer members, vocal and choral instruction, and opportunities for informal interactions with Chanticleer and other workshop participants. Additionally, evening programs offer more music making and social interaction, including an exceptionally entertaining talent night.

This year, we are thrilled to introduce the first Chanticleer Consort Singers Fellowship, which is available for up to five eligible singers. Fellowship recipients will receive:

  • Tuition, accommodation, and $500 of travel expenses

  • Extra solo and small ensemble opportunities

  • The chance to sing as part of Chanticleer during a rehearsal

Additional application and audition requirements for the Chanticleer Consort Singers Program can be found on the Application Instructions page.

Workshop Features

Tutti Choir
Daily singing in the workshop tutti choir, conducted by Chanticleer Music Director Tim Keeler, provides all participants the opportunity to rehearse and perform alongside the members of Chanticleer. Rehearsals feature exemplary warm-ups, professional rehearsal techniques, helpful performance tips, and the thrill of making music in the company of America’s premier classical vocal ensemble.

Chamber Ensemble Singing
Daily intensive small ensemble rehearsals are a unique feature of the workshop. Subgroups of singers are formed on the first day and coached by Chanticleer throughout the workshop. In order to create well-balanced groups, Chanticleer members will conduct voice placement hearings for all singers on the first day. Be prepared to sing a short solo song (it may be your audition recording song or another a cappella piece) and demonstrate your vocal range. Chamber ensemble music scores are distributed at the initial ensemble sessions. So, sharpen your sight-singing skills!

Classes
Chanticleer members will present a variety of classes throughout the week. Examples of past topics include a survey of vocal jazz, the International Phonetic Alphabet, the history of the spiritual, and the immensely popular original score reading session.

Chanticleer Rehearsal
Participants observe a Chanticleer rehearsal and experience their behind-the-scenes music making. This ‘fishbowl context’ provides demonstrations of the ensemble’s rehearsal strategies, interactions among ensemble members and director, Tim Keeler, and insights into how the ensemble perfects its remarkable sound. A question and answer period follows.

Solo Voice Master Class
A voice master class will be conducted for Consort Singers Fellows. Bring two copies of sheet music for a solo piece.

Talent Night
The workshop talent show is the perfect opportunity for new and old friends to band together for musical numbers, skits, readings, OR for individuals to show off special or unusual talents (i.e., playing spoons, gymnastics). If you have ideas that require music, props or costumes, bring them along with you. Besides singing, previous years’ shows included poetry, instrumental music, skating, line dancing, and theater.

Closing Concert
The workshop closes with a concert for family and friends featuring workshop participants singing with the members of Chanticleer. This year's concert will be from 4:00-6:00 in Schroeder Hall in the Green Music Center.  TICKETS can be purchased for $15 at the Green Music Center box office or online.
