Vocal Repertory Recital: A Family Affair

Welcome to the "A Family Affair" concert, taking place on Wednesday, May 17 at 1:00pm. This concert will explore the complex dynamics of family relationships, including those between parents and children, siblings, and other connections that provide us with the sense of belonging and connection that we crave.

As we approach the time between Mother's Day and Father's Day, we reflect on the appreciation and complexities of family dynamics, whether they bring us joy or pain. Family relationships can be a source of strength or weakness, and this concert aims to examine what makes a family and the legacy we receive from our ancestors.

Our students have carefully chosen a song that speaks to a family dynamic that is meaningful to them. The result is a vibrant and varied showcase of works in multiple languages and styles, interwoven into a tapestry of song in Schroeder Hall.

Not all families are blood-related, and we encourage you to think beyond the traditional sense of familial relationships to those connections that provide us with a sense of community, belonging, and love.

The SSU Vocal Program is a thriving component of the SSU Music Department. Our voice students participate in a wide range of performance activities, including major choral-orchestral works, opera, chamber music, musical theatre, and solo recitals. Our program's curriculum includes theory, ear training, piano, and music history courses, ensuring that students develop into complete musicians. Additionally, our vocal repertory class is required for all Performance majors whose primary performing medium is the voice.

We invite you to spend an afternoon with these talented artists at the start of their singing careers as they showcase their interpretation of family relationships through music. Thank you for supporting the SSU Vocal Program and our commitment to exploring the emotional depth of family dynamics.
