One confidential reference must be submitted by a qualified teacher or conductor or other professional who can attest to your musical talents and abilities. Select an individual who knows your present vocal characteristics and choral experience to complete the reference below.

2019 Chanticleer Vocal Reference

The completed form may scanned and emailed or printed and mailed directly by referees to Sonoma State University.

Completed reference forms submitted by the applicant will not be accepted.
Your application is not considered complete until we receive your reference statement.

All applicants must submit a recent a cappella recording as part of the application process.  A digital file submitted via email is preferred, but a CD is acceptable. Professional-level recording is not necessary (a “living-room recording” is fine); however, it needs to be of sufficient quality that a fair assessment can be made. The workshop directors will listen to candidates’ recordings for type of voice and for musicality, including tonality and pitch. This review will help them select workshop participants and repertoire for the chamber ensembles and give them a head start on workshop preparations.

There are two parts to the audition recording.

  • Song: You may sing any song of your choice.  Sing your song a cappella.
  • Vocalise: Sing a variety of scales and arpeggios that demonstrate your lower, middle, and upper range as well as your dynamic capabilities.

Please submit electronic recordings via email as .mp3 or .mp4 files only.  Do not submit .wav files.  You may use a number of free applications to convert CD audio files to the .mp3 format, including iTunes -

Before emailing the file(s) to us, please be sure that the name of the file follows the pattern below and includes both your first and last name, voice part, and the kind of singing sample, and the suffix .mp3 or .mp4.

For example:

  • Doe_John_Tenor_Song.mp3
  • Doe_John_Tenor_Vocalise.mp4

You may also mail us a CD recording at the address above.  Please be sure to label the CD with your full name and voice part.

Please sing a song of your choice.  Your song must be performed a cappella.
The songs below are suggestions only and include accompaniment.

An Die Musik

Ombra Mai Fu

Pieta Signore

Wher'er You Walk
