Music Minor

The Music Department offers two minor degrees in music: the liberal arts music minor and the jazz studies music minor. The minor degrees consist of 20 units of coursework in music, at least 6 units of which must be completed at Sonoma State University.
 
Students may declare the minor after having successfully participated in an ensemble for one semester, and with consent of the department.

Liberal Arts Minor Core courses include:
  • Theory – Music Theory Fundamentals and Theory I (Diatonic Theory)
  • Musicianship – one semester focusing on fundamental development of sight singing, melodic dictation and rhythmic skills
  • History – one semester from American, European or World music offerings
  • Performing Ensembles – four semesters of major and/or minor ensembles
  • Electives – five units minimum, three of which must be an upper-division lecture course in music
 
Jazz Studies Minor Core courses include:
  • Theory –Theory I (Diatonic Theory) and Jazz Harmony & Arranging I
  • Musicianship – one semester focusing on fundamental development of sight singing, melodic dictation and rhythmic skills
  • History – one semester, Jazz History
  • Jazz Improvisation – two semesters, Improvisation II & III
  • Jazz Piano – one semester
  • Performing Ensembles – two semesters of jazz ensembles
