Juries

Flutist performing on stage

Students enrolled in Applied Music courses are required to perform a juried performance to evaluate their musical progress at the end of each semester. The jury consists of approximately 10 minutes of material, as assigned by the private instructor.

A faculty adjudication panel assesses the jury using rubrics specifically tailored to the area of performance (vocal, instrumental, piano, percussion, jazz). The jury grade counts as 25% of the student’s private instruction grade for the semester. The minimum passing score for students in Bachelor of Music degree programs is 75 points (out of 100) to pass. The minimum passing score for students in Bachelor of Arts degree programs is 65 points (out of 100).

A student who does not achieve the minimum score for their degree program, or fails to complete a jury, will be placed on probation by the department. A student on probation will forfeit any scholarship (if applicable). The student must remediate the deficient jury during the subsequent semester, in consultation with their private instructor and the department chair, and complete a jury for the current semester. A student who fails to remediate and/or fails to pass the subsequent jury may be removed from the program.
