Featuring music by guest composer/guitarist John Mayrose and SSU faculty member Thom Limbert, New Music Sonoma (LOOPS!) will be devoted to presenting electroacoustic music that features cyclical sounds, repeated grooves, and live looping.

Limbert’s works on the program incorporate field recordings gathered as part of Soundscapes to Landscapes, a NASA-funded SSU research project currently focused on mapping bird diversity in Sonoma County. (soundscapes2landscapes.org)

New Music Sonoma Digital Program

Program:

Steve Reich: Electric Counterpoint, mvmt. II. slow (arr. for mallet percussion by Thom Limbert)

John Mayrose: Down River to the Rhythm of Rowers for electric guitar and electronics

Thom Limbert: Bird Loop Study No.1 (Thrush) for vibraphone and electronics

Limbert: Bird Loop Study No. 2 (Meadowlark) for electric guitar and electronics (world premiere)

About his Bird Loop studies, Limbert writes:

Since SSU GEP professor, Dr. Matt Clark graciously granted me access to the Soundscape to Landscapes audio database, I have spent many hours working through the thousands of remote recordings and spectrograms to find the most musically rich bird songs that could serve as raw material and inspiration for future compositions. The Thrush study uses recordings made in the Jenner Headlands on the mornings of June 7th and 8th, 2018 where a single hermit thrush was repeating 5 distinct musical motives. The Meadowlark study uses recordings of western meadowlark songs made in late March, 2019 at Sears Point and during the early Spring of 2021 at Tolay Lake. By requiring instrumentalists to play in sync with bird song, my hope is that these pieces become a celebration of the sheer musicality of certain local bird species, highlighting the unique nature of our beautiful county.
