Instrumental Jury Requirements

Scales

  • During each of the first four semesters, students are expected to prepare at least three (3) major scales and three (3) minor scales (in natural, harmonic, melodic forms), so that all 24 major and minor scales have been mastered by the end of the sophomore year.
  • During the junior and senior years students should be prepared to perform any major/minor scales (all forms) at the request of the adjudication panel.
  • Tempo, rhythm, and range are at the discretion of the studio instructor. Instructors may choose to have students play arpeggiated chords.
  • Scales are to be memorized, unless otherwise indicated by the private instructor.

Repertoire

  • Students should prepare approximately ten (10) minutes of repertoire, in consultation with the studio instructor.
  • It is recommended that students prepare to perform two pieces in contrasting styles. However, one longer selection, such as a concerto or sonata may be performed.

Accompanist

  • Students are required to perform with an accompanist (if accompaniment is called for).
  • A staff accompanist will be provided by the department. The student is responsible for arranging rehearsals with the accompanist in a timely manner.
  • Music should be provided to the accompanist at least four (4) weeks prior to the jury date.

Day of the Jury

  • Professional dress is expected.
  • Arrive to the jury room warmed up, and prepared with all equipment.

Jury Evaluation

  • The adjudication panel uses a rubric to evaluate the jury performance.
  • The passing score for students in the B.M. degree program is 75%.
  • The passing score for students in the B.A. degree program is 65%.
  • The jury grade counts as 25% of the student’s private lesson grade.
