Classical Instrumental Jury Requirements

Scales

  • During each of the first four semesters, students are required to prepare at least three (3) major scales and three (3) minor scales (in natural, harmonic, melodic forms), so that all 24 major and minor scales have been mastered by the end of the sophomore year.
  • During the junior and senior years students should be prepared to perform any major or minor scale (all forms) at the request of the adjudication panel.
  • Tempo, rhythm, and range are at the discretion of the studio instructor. Instructors may choose to have students play arpeggiated chords.
  • Scales are to be memorized, unless otherwise indicated by the private instructor.

Repertoire

  • Students are asked to prepare approximately ten (10) minutes of music.
  • Repertoire selections are determined by the private instructor, based on the repertoire the student has been studying during the semester.
  • It is recommended that students prepare to perform two pieces in contrasting styles. However, one longer selection, such as a concerto or sonata may be performed.

Accompanist

  • If the music requires accompaniment, you are required to perform with an accompanist.
  • A staff accompanist will be provided by the department. The student is responsible for arranging rehearsals with the accompanist in a timely manner.
  • Music must be provided to the accompanist at least four (4) weeks prior to the jury date.

Registration

  • Upload the completed Jury Registration Form four weeks before the designated jury date.
  • Students will be notified by the department when it is time to register for a jury time slot.

Day of the Jury

  • Upload music through the Fall 2022 Jury Google Form.
  • Professional dress is expected.
  • Arrive early enough to warm up.

Jury Evaluation

  • The adjudication panel uses a rubric to evaluate the jury performance.
  • The jury grade counts as 25% of the student’s private lesson grade.
  • The passing score for students in the B.M. degree program is 75%.
  • The passing score for students in the B.A. degree program is 65%.
  • Students who fall below the minimum grade will be placed on probation by the department.

Probation

  • Students on probation may, at the discretion of the department, be ineligible for state-sponsored lessons.
  • Students are responsible for remediating the material performed at the failed jury during the subsequent semester. Thus, a student on probation must register for two jury slots— one for the current semester and another for the failed jury.
  • Students who fail to remediate the jury, or who do not pass a jury in two consecutive semesters may be dismissed from the program, asked to change degree programs, or changed to a Music Minor.
