Sonoma State University Music Department Ranks #1 in the Nation for Graduate Earnings ROI
New data from The HEA Group shows SSU music alumni leading the country in post-graduation salary outcomes.
While public discussions frequently question the financial return on investment (ROI) for arts degrees, fresh data reveals that Sonoma State University’s Music Department is shattering those assumptions.
According to a new analysis by higher education research organization The HEA Group, Sonoma State University boasts the #1 music bachelor’s program in the United States when measured by graduate earnings four years after completion.
Breaking Down the Numbers
The study highlighted a significant disparity in music programs nationwide, noting that 15% of music bachelor’s programs fail to meet federal benchmarks, meaning their graduates earn less than the median high school graduate in their respective states.
Sonoma State, however, completely bucks this trend. Four years after graduation, SSU music alumni achieve a median annual salary of $65,533. This exceptional outcome places SSU at the very top of a prestigious national list, outperforming programs at institutions such as the University of Florida, Northeastern University, and Vanderbilt University. On average, graduates from these top-performing programs earn more than $25,000 above their state's median high school graduate benchmark shortly after leaving college.
A Proven Track Record of Success
This ranking underscores the tangible value of an SSU music education. By blending rigorous artistic training with versatile, real-world skills, Sonoma State’s music faculty and curriculum effectively prepare students to thrive and secure strong economic outcomes in a competitive modern landscape.
Congratulations to our incredible students, faculty, and alumni who continue to prove that a passion for music at Sonoma State paves the way for a prosperous future!
