Guest Adjudicator
We are thrilled to announce that this year’s guest adjudicator will be Julie Dana
Since 1999, Julie Reyes Dana has been the director of the Fresno City College Voice and Choral Program, where she conducts the City Singers, Symphonic Choir, Jazz Singers, the Fresno Chorale and teaches Music Appreciation. Under her direction, Fresno City College ensembles have travelled nationally and internationally, including tours to France, Spain, Italy & Germany. In June 2019, Mrs. Dana and the FCC Chorale made their Carnegie Hall debut in the “Reflections of Unity” concert. Mrs. Dana has taught choral music at the secondary and collegiate levels during her 38-year career and is a sought-after clinician and honor choir conductor. Mrs. Dana is dedicated to serving the choral education music community as an active board member of the California Choral Directors Association as state conference chair (CASMEC), the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) for the Western United States as Conference Chair for 4 regional conferences. She is a past President of the California ACDA (CCDA) and served on the board of the Southern California Vocal Association (SCVA). She has also served on the faculty of Jazz Education Abroad (JEA) teaching vocal jazz in the Middle East. She has been honored as District High School Teacher of the Year for Capistrano Unified, has twice received the Fresno City College Academic Senate Hayward Award for “Excellence in Education” and was recently honored with the Bill Stewart Outstanding Educator Award for the State Center Community College District. Her formal studies include a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from San Diego State University, and a Master’s degree in Music Education from the University of Northern Colorado and many, many, many CMEA, ACDA, SCVA, JEN and other music organizations sponsored events. She lives in Fresno with her husband Mike, also a music educator, and together they work to foster an appreciation of the arts at Fresno City College and in their community.
Festival Format
Each choir will be assigned a 30 minute time slot that includes set up, performance of three pieces, and a clinic by our guest adjudicator. During the noon hour, Sonoma State’s chamber choir, SonoVoce, will also perform a short set of choral works. We encourage choirs to stay for the day, as hearing other ensembles is a tremendously valuable learning experience. (It is also a great way to connect and show support for each other after the crazy Covid year we have all just experienced!)
