Sonoma State University voice students perform renowned 19th century mezzo soprano Pauline Viardot’s effervescent chamber opera, Cendrillon—a faithful recounting of the Cinderella fable. The production features the heroine’s familiar transformation assisted by her fairy godmother, the prince, the wicked stepsisters, and a host of courtiers and party guests, who will sing interpolated operatic scenes and solos to enhance the festivities. In addition to performing, Opera Scenes class students participate in all aspects of the production from staging to costumes to publicity. This production is a part of 2020 Songs—the SSU voice students’ spring project discovering and presenting works of women composers and lyricists in honor of the 100th anniversary of the ratification and adoption of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote.
