Please join Dr. Alexander Kahn, Director of Orchestral Activities at Sonoma State University, for the third annual Day of Strings at Sonoma State University.

This free event will take place Sunday, November 21, at the beautiful Green Music Center at Sonoma State University. 

Participants will have the chance to hear performances by our amazing string faculty, read great string ensemble literature by BIPOC composers, participate in masterclasses, learn about the college admissions process from the perspective of current music majors, and gain insights into how to effectively prepare for and take a college admissions audition.  Participants in the event will also receive up to three complimentary tickets to a performance by the world-renowned Julliard String Quartet in the award-winning Weill Hall at 3:00 p.m, as well as have access to an exclusive closed rehearsal session with the quartet.

Tentative Schedule 
9:45 a.m. Welcome and registration: Schroeder Hall lobby 

10:00 a.m. Chamber Music Performances by SSU Strings faculty

10:20 a.m. Masterclasses with SSU Strings faculty 

11:45 a.m. String instrument selection and maintenance with luthier Andrew Caruthers

12:15 p.m. Lunch on Weill Hall lawn (weather permitting)

12:45 p.m. “The College Admissions/Audition Process and Life of a Music Major” panel with current students (Schroeder Hall) 

1:15 pm. String orchestra reading session - string orchestra music by marginalized composers 

2:00 p.m. End of day (The performance by the Juilliard String Quartet has been cancelled due to a health issue with one of the members of the quartet)

Health and Safety for the 2021-22 Season

Beginning September 20, 2021, we will be implementing the following safety procedures for the 2021-22 Season. 

  • Masks are required when indoors for everyone. 
  • All audience members will be required to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination, or a negative COVID-19 test, for indoor seating at the Green Music Center.
