Vayber/Froyen: Klezmer Music of Women

THIS CONCERT HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED FOR THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 15th at 8:00PM.

Previously was scheduled for Thursday, November 8th but cancelled due to campus closure as a result of the smoke from the Butte County fire.

Veretski Pass returns to the Jewish Music Series for its fourth year! A klezmer ensemble-par-excellence, the trio includes Cookie Segelstein, violin; Josh Horowitz, cimbalom and accordion; and Stu Brotman, zakopany cello. Their most recent project has taken them to uncharted territory, dedicated to performing the tunes collected by Sofia Magid, the Jewish ethnographer who worked intensively to document Jewish music in Ukraine during Stalin’s regime in the 1920s and 30s.

Scattered documentation about women klezmorim (East European Jewish instrumentalists) exists, but has hitherto been ignored as inconsequential, in part because, while many of the daughters of klezmer families learned instruments, they were not allowed to play at weddings.

Magid’s 600 recordings have been left untouched since they were created, and include music that was not only collected by a woman, but that also feature rare examples of women’s themes. Veretski Pass’ work involves cleaning, deciphering and transcribing the cylinders, then performing and recording them, and finally teaching them to workshop students.
