Voice Students at Sonoma State University present a wide variety of art songs, arias, and music theatre selections in their semester final recitals. These concerts are the culmination a series of spring performances - 2020 Songs - in which SSU voice students will examine the work of women composers and lyricists in honor of the 100th anniversary of the ratification and adoption of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote in the U.S. Nearly all the repertoire studied in individual voice lessons, the music theatre scenes class, and the opera scenes class comes from women composers and lyricists. Students have written and reflected on their experiences finding and preparing this repertoire, and how it has increased their awareness and interest in performing music by women. Singing these songs and bringing this music to the fore should not be a novelty, and 2020 Songs aims to permanently change SSU voice students’ and faculty’s approach to finding and performing fantastic vocal music by women and other underrepresented and overlooked composers. Join us for this project and for the future of singing!
