Senior Project Jazz Studies Concentration

Senior Project Requirements

  • The Senior Project for BM Jazz Studies majors is a recital program comprising approximately 60 minutes of music (maximum 75 minutes). The recital repertoire should be representative of the repertoire list and academic guidelines determined by your studio instructor and program director.
  • The Senior Recital is a capstone experience in the degree program, to be completed during the final semester of study.
  • Students are responsible for organizing collaborative musicians and accompanists, scheduling rehearsals, and all aspects of the recital project.
  • The recital project will be evaluated and graded by a faculty panel composed of your studio instructor and faculty advisor/program director.

Senior Project Steps

  1. Register for MUS 490 Senior Project (2 units) at the beginning of semester.
  2. Select your recital and hearing dates (see Department of Music website for a list of available dates). Hearing date must be 6 weeks prior to the recital. Consult with your studio instructor, accompanist, faculty advisor/program director, and any assisting musicians before selecting a date.
  3. Complete the Recital Request form (due October 30).
  4. Schedule rehearsals with your accompanist/collaborating musicians.
  5. Create your Senior Recital Poster and Program (refer to the guidelines in the Posters and Programs link).
  6. Complete your Recital Hearing 6 weeks before your recital.
  7. Complete the Student Recital Tech Event Form 4 weeks before your event.
  8. Email pdfs of your Poster and Program to Brooke Tester 4 weeks before your event (these will be uploaded to the Department Performance Calendar).

Senior Recital/Project Hearing

  • Students are required to pass a recital hearing for a faculty panel 6 weeks prior to the scheduled recital date. The hearing ensures the student and all assisting musicians are prepared for the performance.
  • You must present two (2) printed copies of your recital poster and recital program at the hearing.
  • Your studio instructor and faculty advisor will provide you with feedback regarding your preparedness, performance etiquette, and printed materials.
  • Students who do not pass the recital hearing must remediate before presenting the recital.

Senior Recital/Project Considerations

  • Be considerate of your collaborators by scheduling rehearsals well in advance.
  • Discuss stage presence and performance etiquette with your instructor.
  • Choose appropriate attire for a formal performance in your field of study.
  • If you plan to speak during your recital, prepare your remarks ahead of time (it is highly suggested that you write out your remarks).
  • Make 40-50 print copies of your program. A pdf of your program must be submitted to the Music Department Office.
  • Make 20-25 print copies of your poster. A pdf of your poster must be submitted to the Music Department Office. You may post these on approved spaces around the department.
  • You may host a post-recital reception with refreshments/snacks in the Schroeder Lobby, but please make sure to clean the space at the end.
