Band Season:

We have two performing ensembles: Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Concert Band. Andy Collinsworth conducts both, as well as Noma Winds which involves our credential students and high school students from across the county, directed by Kim Mieder.

The season includes full-length concerts and three free mini-performances as part of the annual Wind Band and Orchestra Festival on March 13-15.

Chamber Music Season:

Here you will find instrumental recitals by students, by resident faculty and guest artists, and by the SSU Brass Ensemble and Guitar Ensemble. The chamber music program is under the direction of Marilyn Thompson.

Choral and Vocal:

Here you will find student and faculty voice recitals, choral concerts, music theatre and opera productions. The vocal program is led by Jenny Bent, Director of Choral Activities, and Lynne Morrow, Director of Opera and Music Theatre.

Jazz Season:

Our four jazz ensembles perform twice each semester. SSU Jazz ensembles include:

  • SSU Jazz Orchestra – the flagship 18-piece ensemble performing Big Band standards and modern jazz ensemble repertoire
  • Concert Jazz Combos – two ensembles each semester rotating on a particular jazz sub-genre or era
  • Latin Band – devoted to the styles, rhythms, and concepts found in music from the Caribbean, Brazil, and Haiti

Jewish Music Series

The Jewish Music Series at Sonoma State is a presentation of the Department of Music and the Jewish Studies Program. Now in its 9th year, the series is widely acclaimed for its breadth, depth, and musical excellence as it poses the eternal question of “What makes music Jewish?”

Orchestra Season

The Sonoma State Symphony Orchestra enters its 2024-2025 under the direction of Alexander Kahn. Professor Kahn leads the Symphony Orchestra through a diverse array of orchestral literature, ranging from the Baroque period to world premieres and from classical repertoire to film, opera, and educational works.
