The Bachelor of Music, Music Teacher Preparation Concentration Choral Track provides specialized training in choral music and vocal pedagogy, and also teaches basic skills necessary for teaching many types of music in grades K-12. Students in this program develop skills for teaching and demonstrating vocal technique and musicianship and functional piano accompaniment skills necessary for the choral classroom. In addition, students learn basic instrumental techniques in woodwinds, brass, strings, guitar, and general music.

In addition to the core applied skills courses, courses specific to the Choral Track include:

  • Diction I (English and Italian)
  • Diction II (French and German) 
  • Choral Conducting 
  • Choral Methods and Repertoire 
  • Choral Arranging or Orchestration
  • Choral and Vocal Accompanying

The SSU Bachelor of Music, Music Teacher Preparation Concentration is designated as an Approved Subject Matter Program by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Completion of the program prepares the student for entrance into the Single Subject Credential Program, a one-year licensure program offered by the College of Education, Counseling, and Ethnic Studies.

Prerequisite courses for the Single Subject Credential Program:

  • EDSS 417 School and Society 
  • EDSS 418 Development in Adolescence and Emerging Adulthood
